Basis: Yield for a Tokenized World Wherever an asset trades as both spot and a perpetual future, traders pay for leverage through funding, and holders who short the perp can collect it. That's the basis trade. Today it lives mostly in crypto, but it's not going to stay there. As stocks, commodities and more of the world's assets come onchain, we expect it to become one of the deepest sources of yield in the market. Renzo Basis is built for that future: basis on any asset, across onchain venues, in your own account. Three markets, one trade The basis trade needs three things: dollars to fund it, the asset itself and a perp to hedge it. All three are moving onchain at once. The dollars are already here. Stablecoins now top $300 billion. Under the GENIUS Act, US payment-stablecoin issuers can't pay interest, so holders who want yield have to look elsewhere. Basis offers a dollar yield that comes from market activity, not from an issuer. The assets are arriving. Kraken's xStocks alone have passed $3 billion in onchain market cap. Robinhood offers more than 200 stock and ETF tokens in over 120 countries. On September 17, the SEC opened a five-year Innovation Exemption for trading tokenized stocks onchain. Citi's base case has tokenized securities growing from about $17 billion today to $5.5 trillion by 2030. The perps are following. Real-world asset perps have climbed past 40% of Hyperliquid's futures volume this year, and past 20% on Binance. In the US, the CFTC approved the first true perpetual futures in May, and Coinbase is moving fast to offer a suite of perpetual products. Each asset that gets all three becomes a new basis market: somewhere traders pay for leverage around the clock, and holders can earn by taking the other side. Why basis keeps growing Funding scales with markets. Funding isn't an emission or a subsidy. It's the price of leverage, set by traders. In much of the world, a trader can now take a leveraged position in a US stock at 3 a.m. through a perp. As more people trade more assets this way, across borders and at all hours, we expect the funding paid to the other side to grow with them. Traditional finance already proved it lasts. The Treasury basis trade alone is estimated at $350 billion to $1.5 trillion, decades after it became a standard trade. Spreads move and competition compresses them, but the trade persists. Onchain, it's still early. Basis is the foundation. Synthetic dollars, delta-neutral strategies and many other yield products are built on some version of this trade. As basis grows, so does everything built on top of it. Why it belongs in your account As more of what's onchain becomes people's stocks and savings, handing it to someone else's trading operation gets harder to justify. Renzo Basis runs in your own Hyperliquid account. Basis automatically manages the position through a trade-only agent key that can trade but can't withdraw or transfer funds. There's no lockup, you can revoke the key anytime and you choose the risk preset. Automated guards watch the hedge, the margin and the funding. What's next for Renzo Basis The roadmap follows the assets, and every step stays onchain: More venues. More markets on Hyperliquid, plus Lighter. Real-world assets. Stocks and commodities, after the crypto majors. Cross-venue hedging. Spot on one onchain venue, the hedge on another. The goal: basis on any asset, across onchain venues, run in your own account. The future The world's assets are moving onto rails where they trade around the clock, across borders, with perps alongside. Wherever they go, the basis trade goes too. We think funding becomes to onchain markets what repo is to traditional ones: the everyday price of leverage. Basis is the yield of a tokenized world, and it's just getting started.
