Livepeer 2.0 Protocol Evolution In July an exciting vision update for Livepeer was shared publicly: Livepeer 2.0 is an open video agent platform, that combines a new media planning and execution agent harness, in Livepeer Agent, with a best-in-class network infrastructure for media centric compute, in the Livepeer Network. Agents are taking over video production, and the Livepeer Agent makes the network reachable from the tools people already use. It also surfaced a series of candidate protocol updates to better align the network incentives and behavior to support this new world of multi-faceted media compute on the GPUs on the Livepeer Network, however it stopped short of communicating specific commitments about the mechanisms that would enable this. The brand new Livepeer 2.0 Litepaper, recently released, now commits to one concrete design with specific mechanisms and starting parameters, for updating the Livepeer Protocol for this new world. Here are the main pieces of this key protocol update. Rewards follow real work Today, LPT rewards are paid in proportion to stake. Participants earn whether or not the network is doing anything useful. That struggles to scale to hundreds of different AI media job types, where stake alone can’t tell real usage from a node paying itself. In Livepeer 2.0, a node’s LPT reward is the smaller of two numbers: its share of network fees, or its share of network stake. This is called Min-Fee-Stake (MFS). A node that has 10% of network stake, but earns only 2% of network fees in a round, has its rewards capped at 2%. Fees themselves are never capped, so doing more work always pays more to the node operator, but this encourages stake to move from underperforming nodes to those who are putting real points on the board and performing meaningful work in service of the network. In this new model, anyone can register as a node operator, with no fixed bond requirement and no 100-node cap. Delegation also becomes an active job. Moving stake to a busy, but under-staked node helps raise its reward ceiling, and is far more profitable for the delegator. Leaving delegation sitting on an idle node, will earn zero rewards. Validators check the work Livepeer 2.0 adds a role that the protocol has never had before: validators, who judge whether work was done honestly. The top 33 nodes by total stake, including delegated stake, can register as validators. Validators score each node from 0.0 to 1.0, and the median score decides how much a the node’s eligible rewards it receives. The score is meant to catch dishonestly such as self-dealing, fabricating fees, or maliciously returning incorrect results, rather than act as a quality-of-service grade. Rewards also take 7 rounds to become claimable so that scoring can prevent an attacker from cashing out prior to being noticed. The unbonding period is extended to 21 rounds, to apply a real cost-of-capital penalty to those who are backing nodes that maliciously attack the network. Fees are paid in USDC, and half go to burn LPT Network payments move from ETH to USDC, so node operators can now price work in dollars. At launch, 50% of network fees go straight to the node, and 50% are used to buy back and burn LPT. The more that the network is used, the more LPT leaves the supply. Node operators do not miss out on this compensation however - they are rewarded with newly minted LPT in proportion to the MFS algorithm described above, which is aimed to eventually meet equilibrium with the amount of burned LPT. Emissions follow a fixed schedule Today, inflation in Livepeer adjusts based on how much LPT is staked. In 2.0 emissions follow a fixed schedule. They start at today’s level of issuance, and they halve every two years. This means that the maximum LPT supply is known up front. In reality, any rewards not eligible to be claimed under MFS, are never minted and the supply is even lower. As fees grow, burn catches up with new issuance. The litepaper models this burn mint equilibrium, and in modest growth scenarios it arrives somewhere in years 5 to 8. It can take longer if the token valuation runs far ahead of network revenue, or will occur faster if fees rise more quickly. While the emissions schedule is set in stone in Livepeer 2.0, many governance parameters are exposed to manage the shift from largely rewards based incentives for network participants, to fee based incentives for participants. The parameters of the BME, such as how many fees are used to buy and burn LPT, what % is burned, what % flows to node operators vs the treasury, are all tunable via governance to meet the network’s needs. This is important, because the rewards and incentives available depend largely on the amount of fees, and the market cap of the network. Read it and weigh in While the Litepaper does lay out a set of concrete proposals to begin implementation, simulation, and testing, nothing is set in stone. The implementation and simulation constraints will inform the final designs, and nothing passes without governance and community approval. Read the Litepaper, share your comments in the forum, and be part of bringing Livepeer 2.0 into existence.

A predictable supply for LPT. Livepeer 2.0 introduces a predictable emission schedule that caps LPT's max supply in the future. Under the proposal, new LPT halves every two years in a smooth decline, and half of every USDC fee buys LPT and burns it.

Livepeer 2.0: The video agent platform Livepeer 2.0 is in motion. Here's what's changing in the network and the protocol, and what’s still to come. Agents are taking over the video production line. The tools to generate, edit, and transform video are now embedded in the daily workflow of millions of creators, and yet almost all of them sit behind a closed platform and a tight rate limit. Livepeer’s open infrastructure is the counterforce. We believe that video infrastructure, and the creativity it enables, should be open all the way down. The next chapter for Livepeer Two weeks ago, Livepeer co-founder Doug Petkanics laid out A Path to Livepeer 2.0. After nine years of critical engineering work to build a decentralized GPU network, this ambitious set of upgrades across the Livepeer Network and Protocol enable Livepeer to go to market for the first time without relying on third-party products or applications. This next chapter for Livepeer gives AI agents a truly open network of AI models, tools, and compute for creating and transforming video and media, while still allowing for open experimentation on the network. The three primary changes wrapped in the next chapter for Livepeer include: Connecting the protocol to usage The proposed protocol updates include a Burn-Mint Equilibrium, a stake-elected validator set, and fixed per-node bonds in place of the 100-orchestrator cap. All of these design mechanisms intend to point at one outcome where LPT rewards flow to nodes performing and securing quality work connected directly to demand. This is where we need our delegators, node operators, and contributors to serve as thoughtful design partners to solidify our approach to the most critical protocol design questions. Growing beyond a GPU network Livepeer's node operators historically competed on one thing: hardware. The node operator role was relatively straight forward as it followed a core loop of 1) bring GPUs, 2) run transcoding or inference, and 3) earn fees. That loop breaks under the complexity of AI, where the network now needs hundreds of models available on demand on top of performant compute service providers. With the network changes outlined in A Path to Livepeer 2.0, nodes will serve open models locally, connect APIs, provide compute, and run non-GPU media capabilities like layering audio, clipping, captions, resolution changes, overlays, object aware augmentation, and so much more. The unit of supply is no longer a GPU, it's compute. This opens the door to CPU-only nodes, API-specialist nodes, and operators who compete on breadth and quality of service instead of just silicon. Bringing an agent to market The final component of this next chapter for Livepeer is making the network reachable through an MCP, an custom connector that any agent harness can call that supercharges your agent with video and moving image rendering capabilities. The Livepeer Network answers on the other side with access to the world’s AI models, performant compute services, and a growing library of video transformation skills and playbooks across generating, editing, and augmenting footage, all powered by a global network of independent compute providers. More on the agent itself very soon. The new, open Livepeer stack The Livepeer 2.0 Protocol is the stake-based protocol that coordinates the network, powered by LPT. The Livepeer 2.0 Network is a global marketplace of independent compute providers running the world's AI models The Livepeer Agent transforms your prompt into a finished video, planning the painstaking editing steps, orchestrating across the best models, and settling for the work as it goes, all from inside the agent you already use. Come build it Read the initial roadmap and the 2.0 vision on the Livepeer Forum. If you run an orchestrator, delegate, or hold LPT, the community design sessions are where we’ll explore protocol upgrades. The details and schedule are in Discord. This the first of many exciting updates to come, stay tuned for more next week where we’ll have something new for you to get your hands on.

AI Drives Network ATHs in Q1 2026 Messari’s State of Livepeer Q1 2026 Report, by Senior Research Analyst Jake Koch-Gallup @immutablejacob, marks a milestone for Livepeer: the network reached all-time highs in both usage and fee generation, while AI inference remained the largest driver of protocol revenue. Livepeer processed 134.4 million minutes in Q1, up ↑ 71.9% quarter over quarter. This reflects deeper production usage across existing applications and builders, with demand increasingly concentrated in real-time AI and agent-related workloads. Fees moved with that usage. Demand-side fees increased ↑ 34.2% quarter over quarter to $257,300, also an all-time high. Average revenue per 1,000 minutes declined as throughput scaled faster than fee capture, suggesting the network is becoming more cost-efficient for end users as activity grows. AI-driven fees reached $154,700 in Q1, up ↑ 15.5% quarter over quarter, and accounted for roughly 60% of total protocol revenue. In other words, AI inference is not a side experiment on Livepeer anymore. It is the network’s largest monetization driver. We expect transcoding fees to decline over time as the workload continues toward AI-focused video generation. End-user applications need real-time AI infrastructure that can generate, transform, and deliver video as it’s being produced. Developers need low-latency GPU compute for inference, live transformation, interactive overlays, agent avatars, and other AI-native video experiences. Livepeer was built for real-time video processing. The same architecture that supported live streaming and transcoding now gives the network a path toward real-time AI inference: open access, decentralized GPU supply, and media compute that can scale with application demand. On the supply side, staking participation remained above the 50% target throughout the quarter. This contributed to lower issuance and a continued downward inflation trend, with annualized daily inflation declining to 26.2%. Q1 also showed the ecosystem moving from raw infrastructure toward application-ready workflows. Real-time video engine @DaydreamLiveAI ran a multi-week AI Video Program with creative technologists building generative AI experiences for live streams. Network operators integrated bring-your-own-container (BYOC) capabilities to support custom AI pipelines. Embody and related agent-avatar work moved closer to production paths, connecting speech, prompts, and model outputs into responsive characters. With Q1 as Livepeer’s strongest quarter on record, the Foundation’s priority is to carry the momentum forward. We’re shortening the path for independent developers to put their first inference job on the open network, and expanding the number of builders bringing real-time AI video applications to market. NVIDIA just announced DLSS 5. AI rendering photoreal graphics in real-time. They're calling it "the GPT moment for graphics." Breakthrough technology. But let’s think about what happens when this needs to scale. DLSS 5 requires an RTX 50 series card. For a single user, that's fine. But what about: • Every Twitch streamer running real-time style transfer • Game studios rendering AI worlds for thousands of concurrent players • Creative tools adding DLSS 5 features that run in the cloud Real-time AI video is 1000x more compute-intensive than text or image generation. It needs infrastructure built specifically for continuous, low-latency video processing. The future we’re building towards: > Interactive livestreaming where your appearance changes in real-time > AI agents with visual avatars running in video calls > World models generating entire environments based on user input All of this requires frame-by-frame inference under tight latency constraints. Real-time AI video is a new compute category. And Livepeer intends to champion it. If you’re building the future of AI video, let’s talk.

Livepeer Q4 2025 network report Our friends at @MessariCrypto are back with a quarterly deep dive into how the Livepeer network is being used. Q4 was a confirmation quarter. Strong, sustained usage on the network reinforced growing demand for real-time AI video. 2025 in numbers Network usage reached 78.7M minutes, up 174% YoY Demand-side fees grew 162% YoY to $191.7k AI inference drives 70%+ of network revenue Over the past year, more apps have started applying AI inference directly to live video via generative effects, avatars and interactive experiences. When AI becomes part of a product’s core workflow, usage doesn’t spike and die down. It stays on. That’s what shows up in the year-over-year growth and the steadier usage pattern in the second half of 2025. @DaydreamLiveAI helped make this visible. By making it easier to build and run real-time AI video workflows under live conditions, it pushed projects past experimentation. As those workflows started running regularly, they exposed real constraints around latency, throughput and coordination. These are now shaping how the network continues to improve. Why Livepeer wins in real-time AI Our infrastructure is designed to process streams continuously under low-latency constraints. Real-time AI video fits naturally into that model. Real-time AI demand also behaves differently from traditional compute. It grows while apps are live and scales with user activity. You can’t pause it or plan it neatly in advance without breaking the experience. Supporting such demand requires infrastructure that can adapt in real time instead of relying on fixed capacity. Livepeer’s distributed GPU network and usage-based execution are built for this pattern. Developers can run real-time AI video applications continuously and expand usage as demand grows, without pre-provisioning or reworking their systems. That alignment is why demand has remained strong as more products move into production. Looking ahead 2025 was about validating real-time AI video demand through real network usage. Q4 showed the network operating at a higher baseline. As outlined in the roadmap, the focus now shifts from driving network performance to accelerating adoption. In 2026, the priority is to build on current demand as more real-time AI video products come to market and move further into production. You can check out the full report here
