In July, we announced Encrypted Markets In August, we laid out a 7 phased roadmap to get us there Yesterday, Dusk went live on Ethereum mainnet, bringing Covenants onchain Now we’re building towards Darkfall, taking Covenants across the wider EVM ecosystem Encrypted Markets have just begun
Dusk is coming.
Blacklight Node Migration: The Move to Ethereum L1 Blacklight node operations are upgraded from Nillion L2 to Ethereum L1. As Dusk moves towards mainnet, Blacklight L2 will become the legacy network and be retired. Blacklight L1 will run directly on Ethereum, with node operators taking on a new role in how Covenants are resolved. Both independent and managed node participants can begin migrating from September 26, ahead of the Blacklight L1 mainnet launch. The steps are largely the same, with managed participants moving through the managed-nodes app instead of registering a node themselves. In this post, we'll cover: What Blacklight L1 nodes do What's changing for node operators How independent operators migrate How managed node operators migrate What happens to rewards during migration Key dates Getting started on Blacklight L1 What Blacklight L1 Nodes Do Blacklight L1 gives node operators a different role from Blacklight L2. Blacklight L1 nodes help Covenants stay sealed until the condition attached to them is met. When a Covenant is created, its payload is split into encrypted shares and distributed across a committee of nodes. Each node holds one share, so no single operator can reconstruct the original payload on its own. The nodes then watch for the condition tied to that Covenant. Once it is met, they publish their shares onchain. When enough shares are available, the payload can be reconstructed and verified on Ethereum before any downstream action happens. What’s Changing The move to L1 changes a few things for Blacklight node operators, while some of the core requirements stay the same. The minimum required stake for Blacklight L1 operators remains 70,000 NIL. Rewards on L1 will come from 0.5% annual compounding inflation, alongside trigger fees earned by node operators. Operators will also need ETH to cover gas when running a node on Ethereum. Mainnet nodes will need to be registered fresh on L1, meaning existing Sepolia testnet registrations will not carry over. The expected setup remains similar to testnet: an always-on machine or VPS, Docker, an archive Ethereum RPC, an owner wallet, and an operator address funded with ETH. How to Migrate: Independent Node Operators Independent operators should keep their current L2 node running until they're ready to migrate. From there, the move happens in a few steps: 1. Claim your L2 rewards Claim any rewards you’ve earned on Blacklight L2 before you begin unstaking. 2. Unstake from L2 Unstake your NIL from L2 and wait for an hour for the unbonding period to complete. 3. Withdraw your NIL + ETH After unbonding, withdraw your NIL first and finally your ETH (leave this last as you need it for gas fees on all the previous txs) 4. Bridge your NIL + ETH to Ethereum Bridge them back to Ethereum using the Nillion Bridge. This is expected to take around nine days and is linked to your wallet so you can reconnect later to check the progress. 5. Register your L1 mainnet node Once the mainnet is live on October 5th, register a fresh L1 mainnet node on the Blacklight L1 webapp. Sepolia registrations will not carry over to mainnet.- 6. Stake 70,000 NIL on L1 The minimum required stake remains 70,000 NIL on Blacklight L1. 7. Fund your operator address with ETH Your operator address will need ETH to cover gas on Ethereum. We recommend funding it with around 0.01 ETH. How to Migrate: Managed Node Operators If you currently participate in Blacklight through a Managed Blacklight Node, you can move on the same timetable as independent operators, starting today, September 26. The flow is simpler: Head over to the L2 managed-nodes app and connect your wallet. Then unstake, withdraw your NIL, and finally head over to the Nillion Bridge and bridge it to Ethereum (bridging from the L2 -> L1 takes around 9 days). On October 5th, stake on L1 through the Blacklight L1 managed nodes webapp instead of registering a node yourself. Rewards During Migration While your NIL is moving from L2 to L1, it won't be earning rewards. The move takes around nine days, most of it spent bridging to Ethereum. Plan to start with enough lead time for your NIL to reach L1 before mainnet goes live and L1 rewards begin. Any rewards you've already earned on L2 will still be there after L2 rewards stop. They'll remain claimable until Blacklight L2 halts later this year. We’ll share separate guidance for any funds remaining on L2 ahead of the network halt. Key Dates Node operator migration begins: 26th Sep This is when node operators should begin the L2 to L1 migration process. You can migrate anytime between 26th September till 5th October. Blacklight L1 mainnet: Oct 5 L1 node operations and L1 rewards begin around the mainnet launch. Blacklight L2 halt: later this year Rewards already earned on L2 will remain claimable until the network is halted. Getting Started on Blacklight L1 If you're not already running a Blacklight node, you can start testing Blacklight L1 on Sepolia now. The current setup requires an always-on machine, Docker, an archive Sepolia RPC, testnet NIL, and Sepolia ETH for gas. Mainnet nodes will require a fresh registration and a 70,000 NIL stake, with ETH needed to cover gas. Operators will earn through 0.5% annual compounding inflation and trigger fees. Run a testnet node now and check out the full guide to walk through setup step by step.
Nillion’s Encrypted Markets roadmap moves across seven phases: 1️⃣ Dusk · August - Nov 2026 Brings Covenants to Ethereum L1 with the first app live, condition-gated events, permissionless nodes, tokenomics, node kit, and SDK. 2️⃣ Darkfall · Nov 2026 - Feb 2027 Expands Covenants across EVM chains with chain-specific tooling and stronger node accountability. 3️⃣ Skyglow · Feb - May 2027 Adds cross-chain settlement, letting conditions be observed on one chain and settled on another. 4️⃣ Nightside · May - Aug 2027 Introduces custom condition logic using observable data feeds. 5️⃣ Neon · Aug - Oct 2027 Adds a Covenants language and VM with stronger developer guardrails. 6️⃣ Aurora · Oct 2027 - Jan 2028 Hardens Covenants for a post-quantum world. 7️⃣ Moonshine · Dec 2027 - Feb 2028 Scales Covenants toward everyday use with cheaper data, ZKP-verified reveals, and coprocessors. This is the path from sealed instructions to market activity that can stay private until execution.
Nillion is building Encrypted Markets, and $NIL is becoming intrinsic to how they run. • Developers pay in NIL • Node operators stake NIL • Rewards are paid in NIL $NIL is moving from access token to network economy.
We announced Encrypted Markets in July. Dusk went live on Sepolia in August, and the first Covenants-powered app is now live on testnet. Here's the seven phase roadmap that gets us there 👇
Nillion seals intent until execution, unlocking: • Stops that can't be hunted • Bids sealed until clearing • Silent vault rebalancing • Sniper-resistant launches • Cross-chain deals, one shared condition • Strategies hidden until execution Welcome to Encrypted Markets.
August was a month of shipping at Nillion. From unveiling the roadmap to launching $NIL on Hyperliquid and Upbit, here’s everything that went down. 🧵👇
Upbit to List BTC and USDT Trading Pairs for BICO, BMT, NIL and GWEI According to an official announcement, South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit, will list BTC and USDT trading pairs for Biconomy (BICO), Bubblemaps (BMT), Nillion (NIL) and ETHGas (GWEI) starting at 13:00 on August 21.
nilSwap: the dawn of encrypted markets Imagine a market that can’t watch you. Placing a large order without it moving the price against you before it fills. Building a matching engine whose logic can't be copied the moment it runs. Running an agent that acts on a signal without first broadcasting what it’s watching for. The searcher sees nothing. The sniper sees nothing. Your edge, for once, survives contact with the chain. That market doesn't exist in crypto yet. It's the one Nillion will be focusing on, the first door into it opens today. Follow the money Crypto found its clearest product market fit in financial markets. The global crypto market is worth over $2 trillion, doing more than $66B in daily volume. DEXs alone moved around $168B in the last 30 days. A16z has called privacy one of crypto’s most important moats as more of finance moves onchain. That's the prize. Here’s the catch. In crypto, the market runs in the open, and not just the settled transaction. The intent behind it. The route you’ll take. The condition you’re waiting on. The logic your contract will run. The thing your agent is watching for. You’ve felt this. You’ve watched a large order move the price against you before it filled. You’ve seen a strategy reverse engineered within days of it going live. Visible intent is a tax, and everyone onchain pays it. Public markets are poker with your cards face up. You can still play. But anyone at the table who can see your hand will take your money, patiently, forever. The Part Most People Miss When crypto talks about privacy, it almost means transactional privacy, hiding the amount the sender, the asset. Zcash proved there’s real demand for that. But the transaction is the smallest part of a market. Think of market activity in three layers: Layer 1: the transaction : What moved, and between whom. This is what privacy coins protect today. Layer 2: The execution : How it moved, the route, the matching, the timing, the sequencing. Layer 3 : The intelligence : Why it moved, the strategy, the conditions, the agent’s reasoning, the coordination between parties. Layer 1 is a sliver of what the market actually is. And it’s the only layer privacy has touched. Layer 2 and 3, is where the edge actually lives. Every route, every pending trigger, every piece of agent logic, and every coordination step is broadcast in the clear, usually before it executes. Concretely, that means: A pending condition shows everyone what you’re waiting for A route reveals your strategy before you’ve finished running it. A matching engine can be copied the moment its logic runs onchain. A vault trigger is visible before it fires, so it can front run. None of this is a bug in any one protocol. It’s the default condition of building on a transparent chain. And it gets worse as more finance, and more autonomous agents, move onchain. An agent that has to reveal its reasoning to participate isn’t really competing. Encrypted Markets This is the gap NIllion is building to solve. We call it Encrypted Markets, markets where the sensitive parts of activity, the execution, the logic, and the intelligence stay private while the system still runs and settles in the open. It works by letting you seal an instruction, a trade, an intent, an order, a bid, or a prediction to a condition, and post it onchain fully encrypted. It stays unreadable to everyone, other traders, bots, even the network until the condition is met, at which point it unlocks itself and executes automatically. It also makes markets programmable. You already know the feeling from a limit order or a stop loss, you set the condition once, and it fires without you watching the screen. Encrypted Markets extend that to everything, every trade, bid, and position becomes something you set rather than something you sit and execute by hand, programmable, condition triggered, and private until it acts. The first surface: nilSwap The first surface is in testnet. nilSwap is a small, deliberately narrow starting point: it lets users move between a public asset and a private one without trust an operator to bridge the two sides. Entry and exit is where private markets have always leaked, the on-ramp and off-ramp usually depend on a service that can see both ends of the flow. nilSwap tests what it looks like when they can’t. It's one primitive, not the whole vision. It’s the first place you can put your hands on the direction Nillion is building towards. Follow the guide and head to the interface to test it. The home of Encrypted Markets Zcash and Monero proved crypto wants encrypted money. The larger opportunity is everything money interacts with. That's the ground Nillion is going to claim. Encrypted Markets is an open design space, and it needs builders to define what it becomes. The home of Encrypted Markets starts here. nilSwap is the first door. More are opening shortly. Disclaimer: nilSwap is published by the Nillion Association as an experimental research release on testnet. It is not a commercial product, is not available for commercial use, and no representation is made regarding future availability. See Terms for details.
Crypto lost over $746M to hacks in Q2 2026 alone. Every time another exploit lands, it usually comes down to the same thing. Something important was there to be taken: a key, a verification layer, core logic, or access that should never have been exposed like that. Then one thing breaks, and suddenly everything around it is exposed too, from your funds to the private activity tied to your account. That’s what makes these incidents so damaging. Too much of crypto still leaves its most critical parts exposed and concentrated in one place. It doesn’t have to keep playing out this way. If those pieces were private by default, so no single party or node ever sees them in plain form, many of these attacks would be much harder to pull off. That’s the direction this space needs to move in. And it’s exactly where Nillion fits.
Developer experience has always been central to the Blind Computer. A while back, we announced Phase 2 of the Nillion roadmap. This upgrade is about making the Blind Computer easier to navigate and build on. So what changed? 1️⃣ We launched a unified developer portal across nilDB, nilCC and nilAI. Instead of moving across separate surfaces, developers now have one place to manage usage, buy credits, track balances, handle API keys, upload schemas, and deploy workloads. 2️⃣ We moved to a credits-based system. Great products are built through iteration, and the developer experience should support that from the start. A credits-based model gives developers more flexibility as they test and scale what they’re building. For nilDB and nilCC, credits are powered by $NIL, creating a direct connection between network usage and network resources. For nilAI, the experience is simpler at the surface level, with Stripe payments making it easier to get started. Phase 2 is a step toward making privacy-preserving infrastructure usable at scale.

Building with privacy should feel as simple as building without it. That’s what Phase 2 moves us closer to. As the Blind Computer becomes easier to use, visibility becomes just as important. That’s where Blacklight comes in, giving developers and users a way to verify activity across the network and add trust to what’s being built. Phase 2 is a step toward making privacy-preserving infrastructure usable at scale.

Introducing Managed Blacklight Nodes. A new way to participate in Nillion Blacklight without running the nodes yourself. Stake NIL, access your node through the managed web app, and get started. 👇
nilChain is now officially halted at block #6,222,000. The final snapshot has been taken, and accounts + balances are now locked at snapshot height. Missed the $NIL migration window? We’ll share claim instructions soon.
Blacklight nodes are incentivized to verify private computation on the Blind Computer. To participate, nodes stake a minimum of 70,000 $NIL on Nillion’s Ethereum L2 and are assigned verification tasks by the network. Nodes with higher stake are eligible to take on more verification tasks and earn a larger share of rewards as tasks are completed. Rewards are funded by 0.5% annual inflation of the total NIL supply and distributed to nodes that successfully complete assigned verification tasks. Because annual issuance is fixed relative to total supply, returns depend on the total NIL staked across Blacklight nodes. As total stake increases, rewards are distributed across a broader base. For example, with a total supply of 1 billion NIL: - If 15M NIL is staked, estimated APY is ~33% - If 50M NIL is staked, estimated APY is ~10% Over time, Blacklight verification is expected to be supplemented by developers deploying private workloads, directly tying verification rewards to real network usage.
Today the Nillion Association will begin its structured buyback program with our market making partners at FlowDesk. The program is structured for long term recovery of the Nillion Ecosystem and NIL token market liquidity. Full disclosure on program: https://nillion.com/news/nillion-buyback-program-2025-2026/
In the days following last week’s market event, we commenced a complete review and investigation of the circumstances that led to the sudden movement in NIL. We now want to provide a clear update on the progress of that investigation and our immediate response, the processes now in motion, and how we are positioning the project moving forward. What we did immediately after the incident. The liquidation of NIL tokens by this market maker happened very rapidly and without Nillion’s knowledge or authorisation. As soon as we identified the source of the issue, we took immediate action. The speed and time at which this market maker acted prevented us from being able to halt their actions. After a full accounting of the situation, we began implementing our initial buybacks. The Association allocated capital from the treasury to fund the purchase of NIL within hours of the situation unfolding. However, when volatility and volume spiked to ATHs, the trading conditions became untenable. We paused these buybacks after acquiring 1.1 million NIL to avoid amplifying the existing disruption. Across each step, we acted quickly, coordinated closely with our partners, and focused on protecting the integrity of the market and the community. What Happens Now We are close to finalizing a fulsome structured buyback program. This plan is being developed with our other market making partners at Flow Desk to ensure that buybacks are executed in compliance with market rules, methodically and without creating new instability in the market. The goal is a deliberate, coordinated approach rather than a reactive one. For those looking for an immediate price retrace this is not our strategy, our buyback program will be a longer term program prioritizing stable recovery. We are also accelerating our transition to new market making partners. These firms are being onboarded with stronger controls, clearer oversight, and a framework designed to prevent any recurrence of this type of event. This incident was not the result of a technical error or a system failure. We also want to be absolutely clear that zero team or investor tokens were sold at any point since TGE. This is verifiable onchain through mintscan. The sudden drop in the NIL token was caused by the unilateral and unauthorised actions of the market maker who held a large number of NIL tokens and chose to liquidate the entire position without warning. The facts show that we were acquiring tokens and strengthening our ecosystem. We were blindsided by a unilateral decision that broke both trust and contract, and we are treating this with the utmost seriousness. This will not derail our mission Our mission has not changed. Our community and our belief that privacy is a fundamental human right continue to guide us. This event has tested us but it will not stop us, and what we are building will outlast any single incident. We are here for the long term, and we are not going anywhere.
Private computing network Nillion stated that the sharp fluctuation in NIL tokens yesterday was caused by a market maker selling tokens at scale without authorization. The party in question also refused to communicate with the team during and after the event. Nillion has used treasury funds to initiate a buyback of the affected tokens. Meanwhile, the team has worked with exchanges to freeze the related accounts and is pursuing legal action. https://t.co/FrKGvknTS6
If you were surprised by yesterday's price action, you’re not alone. Our entire team was confused until we realized what happened: a market maker sold NIL tokens without legal authorization from the Nillion Association. Then refusing to respond to any team communications during the flash sell and hours following. This type of behavior unfortunately happens in crypto. We are not going to just say “nice words of hope” to you to fix this. We’re taking immediate action. The Nillion Association has begun buying back the tokens that were sold, using funds from our treasury. We also commit to utilising all funds recovered which were sold without our authorization by this market maker to buy back even more NIL tokens. We’re actively pursuing this to the fullest extent of the law, and have worked through the night with our amazing exchange partners to ensure all accounts and wallets associated with this incident are now frozen. Our community matters. Privacy matters. Our ethos is: privacy is a fundamental human right. This event won't derail our mission. We’re here to build, and we’re here to stay.
Regarding the $NIL price: No team or treasury tokens have moved. To confirm this yourself, you can check on-chain: https://t.co/RvrMwIaym0 We want to assure our users, community, and partners that all Nillion wallets remain fully secure. The network remains fully operational and will continue as usual without disruption. We are investigating this external variable and will report findings shortly.
Nillion 2.0, explained like you’re 5 👇 Imagine a computer that can’t see what it’s working on. It can do the math, run the code and give the output, but it never sees your data. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐍𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫. In Nillion 1.0, it was operated by the team and trusted enterprise partners, proving the Blind Computer could protect data and perform at scale. Now, with Nillion 2.0, the community helps run it. People all over the world can become part of the network, with $NIL as the fuel that powers and coordinates the Blind Computer itself. → Run a node, power the Blind Computer and receive $NIL for it. → Build on it, use $NIL to compute. → The network cycles $NIL through coordination, verification and growth. So what’s really changed? Privacy isn’t just being protected by Nillion anymore. It’s being protected by the people, and powered by $NIL. The Blind Computer now belongs to those who run it ⚔️
Introducing Nillion 2.0. The Blind Computer is decentralizing. Run by the community, powered by $NIL. Full breakdown 👇 https://t.co/ZWyGGlQn76
AI is scaling faster than any technology in history. But it’s doing so on infrastructure designed for extraction Every interaction becomes fuel for systems you don’t control, and the smarter they get, the more exposed you are. What feels like a private exchange with a chatbot is in reality training material, logged and repurposed in ways you never agreed to. And the scale of exposure is accelerating. In 2025: - Over 35B pieces of personal data were exposed in breaches - 38% of employees brought in unauthorized AI tools at work - The computing power used to train AI models grew 400% We need infrastructure that powers privacy-preserving applications, not surveillance economies. That’s what Nillion’s Blind Computer is, where data can be computed without ever being exposed. From AI chatbots like @nilgpt_ to private health networks and sovereign agents, the Nillion ecosystem is becoming home to private apps. If intelligence is the new currency, then privacy is the foundation. Gnillion ⚔️
