Axelar v1.5.3 is now available. The release brings CPU and memory improvements to full nodes and validators, allowing for roughly 4x faster catch-up. It migrates the network to cosmos-sdk v0.53, that carries the latest security updates, alongside a number of our own, introduced in response to the rise in AI-driven attacks. Also included in this version is the authz module, enabling scoped, revocable permissions such as delegating governance voting to a separate key. Validators and node operators should upgrade soon to ensure continuity.

🚨 Security Alert: An attacker exploited an infinite mint vulnerability in a modified CW20-ICS20 token contract (secret1yxj...) on Secret Network, stealing approximately $4.67 million worth of assets from Axelar. Three transactions involving WETH, USDT, and WBTC were bridged into Axelar Network. The attacker subsequently transferred the stolen assets to #ETH. The exploit occurred on June 10, while Axelar and Secret publicly disclosed the incident to the community on June 19. JUST IN: @Axelar discloses a $4.67M exploit targeting assets bridged to Secret Network, with the vulnerability isolated to a Secret-side smart contract. Both connections have been disabled.

    Secret Network (@SecretNetwork)

We have identified an incident affecting assets bridged over IBC to Secret Network from the Axelar chain, with approximately $4.67M worth of tokens taken. Based on current information, the issue is isolated to the Secret-side ICS-20 smart contract of the Cosmos IBC connection between Secret and Axelar, used for assets bridged from Axelar to Secret. Immediately upon becoming aware of the incident, the Axelar emergency committee has disabled the Secret and Secret-SNIP connections. We're reaching out to the relevant exchanges and law enforcement agencies. The incident is isolated to assets on Secret bridged over IBC from Axelar. No other IBC connections or Secret tokens appear impacted. No other Axelar integrations are affected. Axelar’s core protocol is not affected. We're preparing a detailed post-mortem.

We've published a governance proposal to discontinue our integrations with Flow, Berachain, and Plume as part of our effort to focus on key ecosystems and better align incentives for our verifiers and broader network. Since launch, these integrations have seen no meaningful cross-chain activity on Axelar. If the proposal passes, a 3-day notice period will begin before the integrations are formally discontinued. We encourage everyone to review the proposal and cast their vote. https://www.axelar.network/blog/discontinuing-flow-berachain-plume

What a $290M exploit teaches us about bridge security. The $290M exploit that hit the ecosystem over the weekend has caused real harm, not just to users who lost funds and to the affected protocols, but also to the credibility of DeFi and web3 as a whole. The attack was evidently meticulously planned and well executed. But the conditions that made it possible were created long before the attacker showed up. There were multiple points of concern here: First, the bridge was shipped with a single operator configuration, creating a point of centralization, and this configuration was the documented default. Second, that operator was the bridge operator themselves. Third, the operator/RPCs were compromised, indicating operational security shortcomings. +Lastly, the post-mortem report lacks details on how this compromise took place, deflecting accountability. This incident could have been avoided with the adoption of security best practices. Downstream protocols cannot be expected to invent the correct security assumptions on their own nor operate their own validators. That is the job of the bridge. 1) Defining security assumptions, 2) selecting and training validators, 3) ensuring technical competence are all the responsibility of the bridge protocol to prevent compromise; and responding to incidents with public accountability and transparency. The framework for getting this right is well understood. Adapting web3 best practices means a sufficiently decentralized validator set requires operators that are multiple, geographically dispersed, running across different cloud providers, different hardware, different software, and ultimately operating in different jurisdictions. And we must not forget standard operational security processes we know from the web2 era: secure-by-default, defense-in-depth, and proper post mortems. It is high time we raise the standard as an ecosystem.

Every hacking and stolen money incident harms the trust users place on our blockchain systems as a whole and delays adoption of the global worldwide ledger we're envisioning. We stand with the @LayerZero_Core team as they're navigating this difficult situation and rebuilding trust. Each such incident is a learning opportunity for the whole community, and in this case, us, the rest of the interoperability ecosystem. While we're still waiting for the forensic evidence to come out for the final verdict, we're reminded there's multiple safeguards to building safe bridges, and all of them must be taken care of to effect security-in-depth. First, secure the opsec of the bridge operators, validators, and verifiers with correct incentives and training, and remove validators who have not illustrated technical excellence. Second, make sure the number of operators is large, heterogeneous, diverse, and geographically dispersed, not ultimately owned and controlled by a single entity that can be compromised. As we know from Axelar, building bridges takes years of effort and we have great respect for the layer0 team and what they've accomplished. We stand with them and by them as they're handling the aftermath of this painful $290M exploit.
