Vitalik: L2s That Only Copy Ethereum Make No Sense Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin @VitalikButerin stated during his speech at the 4th Hong Kong Web3 Festival on April 20 that an L2 that merely clones Ethereum and makes it more centralized is meaningless. A truly meaningful L2 should examine application needs and build the required off-chain components outside of Ethereum L1. Furthermore, Vitalik noted that future scaling remains a key focus: first, data scaling, which requires further advancing the PeerDAS technology introduced in a previous hard fork; second, compute scaling, which allows different applications to compose and communicate with each other without the need for any intermediaries.
