Arthur Hayes: Taking a Bus to the China Early On to Profit from Bitcoin Arbitrage On March 10, 2026, during an interview with Natalie Brunell, Arthur Hayes shared his early experience of founding BitMEX. In the fall of 2013, he utilized the Mt. Gox withdrawal crisis to profit from Bitcoin arbitrage between mainland China and Hong Kong. However, he soon realized that short-term trading without technical skills wasn't sustainable. To establish a long-term presence in crypto, he leveraged his derivatives expertise and teamed up with Ben Delo and Sam Reed in 2014, bypassing the crowded spot market to launch the derivatives exchange BitMEX.
