NEWS: MTN Zambia has completed field testing of Starlink's Direct-to-Cell technology, becoming the first African mobile network operator to do so, and executed the first satellite-based fintech transaction in Zambia using the MoMo platform over Starlink's LEO constellation. The test paired MTN Zambia's licensed terrestrial spectrum with Starlink satellites, allowing standard 4G LTE smartphones to connect directly to space-based cell towers without additional hardware. A commercial D2C launch is targeted for "the coming weeks" pending approval from ZICTA.
