API Economy 2.0: Build Tools that Pay You If you build a great open-source tool, all you get is stars on GitHub. If you want to monetize it, your only options are making and maintaining a service that utilizes it or privatizing and running it on your own infrastructure, charging for API access. The problem with this is that it places a lot of load on the developer (upfront costs, application management, TOS/Rules for API usage, etc). Open-source is still as needed and valuable as ever, yet the space hasn’t evolved to bring any good options that help developers monetize their tools while keeping them open-source without the extra work. Talus has been working on the solution to this. By connecting your tool to a Talus Agent, it can be called on by users or Agents when required, and you get paid every time the tool is used. The Shift: Live Service Everything We are entering the API Economy 2.0, where the proliferation of low-code/no-code tools and vibecoding means that nearly everything and anything will be offered as a live service tool if it's going to be given a second glance. At the same time, Agentic AI is projected to generate up to $450 billion in economic value by 2028 (up from $19 Billion in 2025), meaning the infrastructure beneath and the tools on top of these Agents are becoming the most valuable real estate in tech. In the Talus ecosystem, developers can publish onchain and offchain tools that build out the skills of Talus Agents. We aren't just talking about complex AI either; there will be a huge demand for the fundamental utility tools that power the digital world. You could build a tool that parses PDF invoices, a node that triggers a Slack notification, or a script that updates a Google Sheet row whenever an onchain trade occurs. Whether it’s a specialized sentiment analyzer, a crosschain liquidity aggregator, or a simple web scraper for real-time news, your project becomes a modular tool that any Talus Agent can pick up and use. The "App Store" for Agents Through the Talus Framework, every tool has an integrated payment system. When an agent incorporates your tool into its workflow to complete a task, a micro-fee is automatically routed to you. Build once, earn forever: Your utility becomes a permanent revenue stream. Micro-transactional logic: Agents pay for exactly what they use, making high-quality, niche tools just as viable as generalized ones. Efficiency as a Competitive Advantage Talus Labs’ Technical Program Manager, Billa Coetsee, describes this as a "Free market for code." In this economy, competition will be more about efficiency and usefulness than who makes it first. Because these Agents run on a decentralized network, they are sensitive to gas and usage costs, meaning developers are incentivized to optimize their tools to be as lean as possible. If your tool is more efficient and cheaper than a competitor's, the market (the Agents) will naturally migrate to you. This creates a relentless feedback loop of innovation that benefits the entire network. The Future is Agentic The engineers who start building the muscles for these agents today will be the architects of the next decade. In the API Economy 2.0, you're a service provider in a global, autonomous workforce. In the next part of this series, we’ll dive more into the details of the role the $US token will play in the agentic economy. Keep up with the Series This article is part of a series, and in Part 3, we discussed the importance of trust within the AI Agent sector as a core priority for mass adoption.
