Why Starknet Has the Potential to Become Crypto’s Ultimate Privacy Engine Privacy is one of crypto’s hardest unsolved problems and one of the areas seeing the strongest demand today. At StarkWare, we believe Starknet stands out as one of the only ecosystems with all the core ingredients needed to become a true privacy engine. Here’s why. 1. A Fast Chain A privacy network must deliver on two fronts at once: High throughput, to support heavy private computation and large transaction volumes Low latency, because privacy UX breaks down quickly when the experience feels slow Starknet is built for both. Today, it can comfortably handle around 1,000 true TPS with strong L2 finality, and we are targeting 10,000+ TPS and even faster finality in the coming months. This speed requirement rules out chains that are inherently slower at the base layer, such as Zcash. While Zcash is actively working to improve performance, it could also benefit significantly from a ZK rollup built on top of it. That is precisely why there have been extensive discussions around a Starknet-style L2 on top of Zcash: combining Zcash’s L1 privacy with account abstraction, higher throughput, lower fees, and a more flexible execution environment. 2. Succinct Verifiability A privacy-first blockchain must be cheap and easy to verify. That is essential because privacy at scale ultimately requires client-side proving. In practice, that means: users’ phones must be able to verify the chain state succinctly proof generation and verification must remain efficient users cannot rely solely on consensus for trust Built on STARKs from day one, Starknet inherits this succinctness by design, making client-side verification far more accessible. If a blockchain is not succinctly verifiable, mobile wallets cannot privately verify anything without outsourcing trust. This is why fast but non-succinct chains like Solana are not well suited for full-stack privacy, even if they can still support strong privacy tools at the application layer. 3. ZK Friendliness at Its Core A privacy chain must be ZK-friendly from top to bottom. Everything needs to be easy and cheap to prove: hash functions, virtual machines, programming languages, proving systems, and more. This is where Starknet stands apart: its architecture was designed from inception for efficient proving the Cairo VM is optimized for recursion, STARK generation, and verifiability every layer is built with long-term ZK scalability in mind it is not constrained by the EVM roadmap or by the need to preserve compatibility with it Starknet’s edge is simple: it is ZK-native at every level. That puts it well ahead of EVM-based rollups, which are still trying to retrofit ZK capabilities into a VM that was never designed for this purpose. Solana also deserves credit for enshrining some ZK verification primitives, which can enable meaningful privacy features at the application layer. But without succinct verifiability at the chain level, it does not meet the requirements for full-spectrum privacy. 4. Cheap, Abundant Computation Private computation requires a massive amount of proving and verification, something most chains are simply not built to support. Starknet is different because its ZK-native design makes this kind of computation both scalable and cost-efficient. More specifically: verifying proofs on Starknet is highly cost-efficient Noir proofs, Cairo proofs, and recursive proofs can all be verified efficiently future enshrined primitives should make this even cheaper over time This gives Starknet the potential to become the most efficient global settlement layer for ZK verification, without compromising on security or succinctness. That is why we have often described Starknet as a backbone for the Integrity Web. And it is now becoming clear that the very same property also makes it a powerful privacy engine. 5. Best UX Privacy breaks if UX breaks. But delivering privacy in a way that feels seamless and intuitive for everyday users is extremely difficult, largely because most existing blockchain infrastructure was never designed for it. In practice, privacy UX today is often fragmented. Users are forced to juggle multiple tools, bridges, and proofs manually, which creates friction and makes mainstream adoption unrealistic. Starknet has two major advantages here. A. Native Account Abstraction Native account abstraction enables a much smoother onboarding experience: web2-like signups, frictionless signatures, session keys, and smart accounts that abstract away blockchain complexity. B. Fast Client-Side Proving and Efficient Light Clients S-two, StarkWare’s next-generation prover, is extremely fast and is becoming increasingly suited for mobile-friendly proving, helping make client-side proving practical. It already outperforms other leading ZK VMs by up to 28x. Combined with succinct light clients, this opens the door to fast private transactions and a user experience that can genuinely compete with mainstream apps. And crucially, it brings us closer to solving one of the hardest problems in privacy UX: instant notes discovery (hint, our team is working on something big here!). Starknet Meets All the Requirements for Endgame Privacy To summarize, very few protocols satisfy even half of the requirements for true privacy. Starknet meets all of them at once. Starknet has the potential to become the ultimate privacy engine because its architecture, performance, and ZK-native design address all the core challenges of scalable, trustless, and usable privacy. Stay Tuned Just last week, Starknet dropped major privacy news with the introduction of strkBTC, a new wrapped Bitcoin token with built-in privacy capabilities. With strkBTC, users choose whether or not to shield their balances and transfers, and can participate in all DeFi on Starknet without publicly broadcasting positions, strategies, or finances. Learn more about strkBTC here and here.
