The Power of Market-Aware Buybacks When it comes to token buybacks, the mechanism of execution matters as much as the intent. Historically, protocols have relied on two core models. The first is Schedule-Based, where tokens are mechanically acquired on a set cadence regardless of price. This is predictable but capital inefficient; it allows sophisticated actors to front-run the treasury, effectively extracting a "predictability tax" from the protocol. The second is Discretionary, driven by the intuition of a human team. While flexible, this introduces behavioral bias and opacity, leaving the treasury vulnerable to poor timing and emotional decision-making. This is why the Aerodrome Foundation’s upcoming Momentum Fund will follow a Market-Aware strategy when it has a mandate to make buybacks, an algorithmic framework that acquires tokens based on pre-set, responsive rules rather than rigid schedules or human impulse. The Logic of Responsiveness The core advantage of a market-aware strategy is capital efficiency. By designing rules that respond to market conditions, the system avoids deploying capital into static or overheated markets. Instead, it deploys resources in moments of opportunity. When conditions are favorable, the Momentum Fund accumulates reserves by collecting veAERO voting rewards and pausing buybacks. When volatility increases, the system can allocate a share of the reserves to acquire AERO, scaling the allocation proportionally to the price volatility relative to historical average. This creates a counter-cyclical force: the protocol captures more value over repeated iterations by capitalizing on market inefficiencies. The result is a stronger balance sheet built on the same capital base. Most buyback programs face a zero-sum trade-off: invest in growth or return value to holders. The Momentum Fund breaks this dichotomy. By acting as a neutral, long-term player, it programmatically accumulates voting power to scale its ability to support the protocol's growth. This dual-track efficiency, simultaneous value accretion and ecosystem expansion, is only possible with a token like AERO that wields real economic power. Proof of Concept To validate this logic, before full deployment, the Aerodrome Public Goods Fund (PGF) executed a live pilot using the Momentum Fund’s algorithmic framework beginning in Epoch 111. The data confirms the thesis. Over the pilot period, the program acquired 8.7 million AERO, averaging 670,000 AERO per epoch. Critically, the system demonstrated the ability to distinguish between noise and signal. The impact was most visible during periods of high volatility. As price swings intensified, the algorithm expanded its footprint to stabilize the asset. In Epoch 122, as volatility peaked, the program acquired 27.5% of all weekly AERO emissions, maintaining a buy rate above 20% for several consecutive weeks. Strategic Consolidation This pilot serves as the prologue to a larger structural shift. The Public Goods Fund and Flight School programs will soon be consolidated into the Momentum Fund, a unified capital allocation engine. Once active, this engine will apply the same market-aware framework at an institutional scale, pairing governance influence with disciplined capital deployment. The objective is to support strategic pools, reduce floating supply, and strengthen the Aerodrome economy. Furthermore, the Momentum Fund will introduce buyback-and-burns, permanently removing AERO from circulation when specific market conditions are met. Conclusion This represents a maturity moment for Aerodrome’s economic architecture. By moving from static distribution to dynamic allocation, the protocol is building a system designed for longevity. This is one of many enhancements coming soon with the launch of Aero. A next-generation architecture, expanded revenue streams, and a disciplined economic system are designed to support efficient expansion at scale. The result will be a platform positioned for category leadership as a global, onchain liquidity marketplace.
