7) Talking Past Each Other a) Juan Orlando Hernández was just pardoned by President Trump, and I can't think of a single man more deserving than him. There are a lot of inmates who shouldn't be in prison, but this one takes the cake. Hernández wasn't just not a narcotrafficker; most people qualify as that. He was one of the most effective anti-cartel leaders in the world. Honduras owes him an enormous debt. The United States does, too, although for a very different reason. b) But that's not how the Left sees it. They say the pardon is hypocritical. NYT calls it a "head-spinning resolution" that President Trump would pardon the man who "flooded America with cocaine" just because Hernández is a "victim of political persecution." c) They're missing the point: Juan Orlando Hernández is innocent. The Times mentions "a machine gun with Mr. Hernández's name emblazoned on it"; I doubt they bothered to learn that it was a gift he didn't even keep. They claim a series of bribes but don't mention that they were attempted bribes—that they were refused. I doubt they bothered watching the actual video of the Denny's meeting. No need to look at the evidence; they just take the prosecution's word for it all. (Last year, I wrote six pages defending Juan Orlando's innocence and sent them to a bunch of news outlets. Nothing came of it.) d) The Trump administration keeps saying that political persecution has a tendency to lose track of the truth somewhere along the way. That sometimes, prosecutors actually are biased; actually are wrong. The Left doesn't even realize what President Trump is saying. It doesn't even occur to them to question whether Hernández was really guilty.
