3) Honduras a) The first thing to note is that Honduras absolutely did have a decades-long conspiracy involving hundreds of murders, billions of dollars of cocaine, and a truly shocking level of political corruption. From 2006-2014, most of the cocaine that ended up in the States began in Columbia and made a layover in Honduras. The President at the time was involved, as was his son, as was the head of their Supreme Court. So was the president before him. Honduras had the city with the highest murder rate in the world. b) In 2014, Juan Orlando Hernández was elected President of Honduras. He was a center-right candidate who promised to crack down on the drug cartels. He was re-elected in 2018, and left office in 2022. Between 2014 and 2022, while Hernández was President, the leadership of every major cartel was arrested and extradited to the US—using a new extradition treaty he wrote. President Hernández worked closely with US law enforcement, and became the Trump administration's most valuable partner and ally in the region. Murders dropped by more than 50%; drug trafficking dropped by more than 90%. c) So, there absolutely was a massive narco conspiracy in Honduras, but JOH left office as the President who ended Honduras' role as one of the cocaine capitals of the world. Within a month of leaving office, he was arrested at the request of the DEA and extradited to America (using the law he wrote, ironically).
