2) Juan Orlando Hernández a) Unlike most prisoners, Juan Orlando is not aggressive. He speaks softly. He doesn't even curse—I taught him the word 'shitshow' and that is the foulest thing I've ever heard him say. He would sometimes accidentally cause a minor social dispute because he found it unnatural to tell an innocuous white lie, even to a very large, very dangerous prisoner who probably had a shank in his pocket. He's quiet and introverted; he's proud, in a reserved sort of way. He has a stubborn dedication to doing what's right. He's also extremely kind, helpful, and—above all—thoughtful. b) He also really hates drugs. At one point he acquired half the unit's supply of batteries so inmates couldn't use them to smoke. (There are no lighters in prison, so the standard way to ignite Deuce/K2 was to connect two ends of a battery with a wire, short-circuiting it and producing waste heat.) c) In early 2024 he was convicted of a decades-long conspiracy involving hundreds of murders, billions of dollars of cocaine, and a truly shocking level of political corruption. He was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison. How do you reconcile that with who he is as a person? d) He was framed.
