Codatta × Binance Booster Week 11 Postmortem: What Happened, Why It Happened, How We Fixed It By Codatta Team On 2025/09/16 TL;DR — During Booster Campaign Week 11, some users saw on-chain confirmations stretch from our expected ~28 hours to ~40 hours. We dug in, found the bottlenecks, shipped fixes, and hardened the pipeline. Our Contribution Fingerprint (CF) is anchored on Base, ensuring scalability and low-cost provenance. Below, we (1) explain Contribution Fingerprint (CF) in plain English, (2) review the incident, (3) walk through our technical response, and (4) thank this community for an unforgettable one-week sprint that drew 3M participants and pushed us past 800K KYC-ed users. 1) Understanding Contribution Fingerprint (CF) — Proof of Ownership A Contribution Fingerprint (CF) is a compact cryptographic hash that binds you (your address) to what you submitted (the canonicalized submission) at a point in time. Practically, we compute a hash from immutable inputs (e.g., contributor address + submission ID + canonical submission data), anchor that hash and pointers on-chain, and keep the heavy payload off-chain (encrypted). Anyone can later verify integrity by matching the payload’s content ID with the CF that was anchored on-chain. This gives cheap, immutable provenance without bloating chain state. Why it matters: CF is the backbone of durable attribution, so if the data you provided becomes a commercially valuable asset, your ownership can be calculated from an auditable, append-only history. This is how we protect contributor rights at scale while preserving data value. (See the Contribution Lifecycle diagram on p.1 for the end-to-end flow; p.2 details the CF construct; p.3–4 show the append-only evaluation and invariants.) It also reflects our vision: contributors should benefit from the AI systems they help create. Read more in our vision statement: https://codatta.io/vision 2) Incident Review — What Happened in Week 11 Context. Week 11 invited users to generate a local CF and compare it with on-chain records to verify durable contribution. End-to-end, this flow can take up to ~28h as submissions move from pre-scan → anchoring → evaluation → publish. Some users, however, waited ~40h. What we found (root causes). Traffic surge + skewed distribution. Demand in the first 24–48 hours far exceeded expectations and wasn’t evenly spread across task types, creating a backlog. (See the task distribution and on-chain distribution charts in the incident report.) Priority imbalance. An edge case in our prioritization meant two non-CEX task types jumped the queue first, starving CEX-related submissions that Week 11 depended on. Nonce sequencing friction. Transactions were serialized more strictly than necessary (sequential nonce retrieval from the chain), further limiting throughput under load. Timeline highlights (UTC). Service launched 9/12 07:00; user reports of delays escalated on 9/13 ~10:00; we identified the twin bottlenecks (priority + nonce) by ~13:00 and shipped mitigation; throughput improved markedly by 9/14 00:00 after code updates. 3) Technical Response* — Fixes and Data Integrity Immediate mitigations we shipped Rebalanced on-chain priorities, so Week-11-critical CEX tasks (Deposit/Withdraw) received top priority across queues. Result: the backlog drained in the right order. Execution-path optimizations reduced unnecessary consistency checks and wait times inside the anchoring path, improving effective throughput once the queues were reprioritized. Result: the on-chain execution time sped up by >50%. What's next (hardening for the next 10×) Fair-share priority lanes by task family to prevent cross-domain starvation during spikes. Nonce/tx pipelining improvements to reduce sequential choke points and increase parallelism under load. Autoscaling evaluators with backpressure signals from the anchoring layer so we scale the right tier at the right time. Final Remarks Thank every community member for showing up and sticking with us. Your effort doesn’t only complete tasks; it creates commercially valuable data and builds a growing network of knowledge providers. With your help and smooth onboarding via Binance Wallet, we’re accelerating to 900K+ KYC’ed contributors. That scale strengthens the protocol for everyone. Looking ahead to Week 12, the final week of Booster. This is just the beginning of building the knowledge layer for AI, where AI subscribes to human knowledge, contributors keep their share, and the value flows fairly to both the upstream data providers and the downstream AI models they empower. Footnote: The Codatta native token ticker $XNY represents the variables (X, y), symbolizing input–output pairs in data and knowledge. It reflects the protocol’s mission to turn contributions into structured knowledge assets.
