FraxNet: The Fat Stablecoin Thesis Banks keep your yield. So do most stablecoins. FraxNet was built to change that. Now that GENIUS has passed, the next evolution of stablecoins is in sharing value with the holder. The Fat Stablecoin Thesis In 2016, Joel Monegro’s “Fat Protocol Thesis” observed that, unlike the internet, where value accrues to corporate apps like Facebook and Google, blockchain networks like Ethereum would capture more value at the protocol layer. Shared data and network effects made these protocols “fat,” while applications remained “thin.” While some argue crypto has since over-indexed on protocol development, the framework remains useful for comparing corporate platforms to decentralized networks. A similar contrast exists between traditional banks and stablecoins. Banks follow a “Fat Corporation” model: they take your deposits, lend them out, and keep nearly all of the resulting yield, fueling their bloated overhead. Stablecoins have the potential to flip that, returning most of the value to the users who supply the capital. Top stablecoin issuers today still mirror the banking model, capturing yield rather than sharing it. So what happens when a positive-sum stablecoin issuer decides to do the opposite? FraxNet is the answer. It’s the account layer for frxUSD, positioned between our L1 Fraxtal and frxUSD holders. FraxNet will be the first product on the market to enable GENIUS-compliant, programmable yield distribution to stablecoin holders. We believe the future of stablecoin growth lies in this “Fat Stablecoin Thesis,” returning value to holders and aligning incentives with our institutional partners. The GENIUS of Stablecoins GENIUS is the best thing to ever happen to stablecoins. Period. Some critics point to strict collateral requirements and the exclusion of yield-bearing stablecoins as signs that innovation will be stifled. But these are small, acceptable tradeoffs in the context of an exponentially larger shift of adoption. GENIUS provides the regulatory clarity needed to integrate stablecoins into the broader financial system, a massive unlock we explored in our first article, “Stablecoins as Legal Tender.” And while the law prohibits rebasing or price-appreciating stablecoins, it does not prohibit incentive structures. FraxNet delivers those incentives in a compliant, accessible way. The platform enables: Minting and redeeming frxUSD with fiat, crypto, or brokerage funds Real-time yield streaming to a linked wallet Savings-like features with no lockups or custody Seamless integration into third-party wallets, apps, and fintech frontends This structure abstracts away complexity and makes compliant yield distribution a first-class feature. Users and institutions don’t need to understand the Fraxtal blockchain or the smart contracts behind frxUSD, they simply login to FraxNet, deposit, and begin earning real-time yield in a few clicks. FraxNet Unlocks $8 Trillion in Money Market Funds In our previous pieces, we have explained how stablecoins, as better money, are positioned to replace all $20 trillion of U.S. M2 money supply over time. Of that, money market funds (MMFs) represent $7.5 trillion and growing, a target ripe for disruption. MMFs were born out of regulatory arbitrage in the 1970s, offering better yields than capped bank accounts and quickly becoming a critical pillar of the mutual fund industry. Their growth was explosive, from zero in 1971 to crossing $1 trillion in 1997, $5 trillion in 2020, and now accelerating toward $8 trillion as institutional demand for liquidity and yield continues to surge. Today, money market funds remain a cornerstone of corporate treasury and asset management, but they are still products of legacy finance. These funds settle only once per day, rely on multiple intermediaries, and offer no programmability. FraxNet and frxUSD provide the same level of institutional security but remove these inefficiencies. Yields accrue in real time, transfers settle instantly, and payouts can be automated through smart contracts. The limitations of daily settlement lock up capital and prevent institutions from redeploying funds or earning additional yield between cycles. With frxUSD on FraxNet, institutions gain continuous access to both liquidity and yield. This enables more efficient cash management, reduces idle capital, and helps maximize returns. As this infrastructure comes online, it is no surprise that leading institutions are already preparing to integrate with FraxNet. The Fat Stablecoin Thesis explains why this shift is inevitable. Institutions aren’t looking for another middleman to capture their yield, they’re looking for infrastructure that returns it to them directly. FraxNet was purpose-built for this future. It offers a plug-and-play system where yield flows to the holder, not to the issuer, aligning incentives through transparent, programmable distribution. This is what makes Frax fundamentally different. In the race to modernize global cash infrastructure, institutions will choose platforms that deliver superior economics, not just familiar branding. Banks are building their own stablecoins, a process that will take years with varying levels of success. FraxNet is launching this month. Where We Grow From Here With GENIUS now providing regulatory clarity, FraxNet is positioned to do for stablecoins what money market funds once did for mutual funds and more. Institutions are increasingly seeking programmable, yield-bearing cash layers that integrate seamlessly into modern fintech infrastructure. FraxNet delivers this with compliant, transparent, and auditable architecture. Real-time yield distribution eliminates the inefficiencies of MMFs and unlocks entirely new financial primitives for treasuries, fintechs, and asset managers. While some believe domestic adoption of stablecoins will lag behind international markets, where demand for dollar stability is more urgent, the Fat Stablecoin Thesis suggests otherwise. Stablecoins that solve for compliant, programmatic yield have a built-in competitive advantage that transcends geography. Capital naturally gravitates toward superior products. The momentum is already building. Audits are underway, and frxUSD is on track to be the first GENIUS-approved stablecoin bringing this vision to life. The road ahead is clear: stablecoins are no longer just a crypto-native curiosity. With FraxNet, they are evolving into a superior alternative to traditional cash management products, giving institutions a clear reason to upgrade.
