I often compare blockchains to early day WAN networks, with the eventual goal of a decentralized internet. To access the internet, you need data, usually measured in megabytes/gigabytes. This costs money. To access the decentralized web, you need gas fees, measured in mgas/ggas. This costs money. So using the above mental model, consider Fee Monetization. Consider you launched a popular game. You make it entirely free to play. But, the ISP pays you 90% of all the bandwidth used by people playing your game. Bandwidth which you can immediately exchange for real money. Let's look at some numbers; World of Warcraft has a total player base of 162,215,177. The average player plays 24.5 hours per week. World of Warcraft uses 40 Mb / hour of play. This would translate to 7,698 petabytes of data used per year. Or roughly $206,662,135,498 of data used. World of Warcraft earned $686.8m last year. If ISP's instead had Fee Monetization it would have earned $186bn and could have made the game entirely free. The reason the decentralized web and crypto as a whole can be better, is because it is optimized towards better incentive alignment. FeeM is the next big step in this.
