What is a data withholding attack? Imagine the governor of your state signs an executive order, but doesn't tell anyone what's on it. They can claim the order says anything. No one can prove otherwise. This would be a problem. In blockchains, this is called a data withholding attack, and it can be catastrophic. If one of these is successful, the sequencer can freeze all the funds on the rollup—and in some cases steal them completely. All because a chunk of transaction data was not temporarily made available to other nodes for some amount of time. In order to operate while preventing this kind of attack, rollups need a Data Availability solution offering certifiably decentralized temporary storage. For the Ethereum rollup, Ethereum DA is the natural choice. But it's not currently built for scale. Ethereum blobs only offer 31 KB of DA per second, equivalent to only 170 transactions per second. This means no hyperscaling with Ethereum DA. And that's why we built EigenDA. With 15 MB per second of secure DA throughput, EigenDA prevents data withholding attacks and enables rollups to hyperscale today, making plenty of room for the next wave of adoption.
