The AI Loop #32: OpenAI Takes on NVIDIA, Samsung's $648B Bet, and Micron Joins the $1T Club Welcome to The AI Loop #32. AI infrastructure is taking center stage. This week, the biggest moves weren’t just about new models, but about the chips, compute, and capital needed to power them. From custom hardware to massive national investment plans, the race is getting bigger, deeper, and a lot more expensive. On the Perle side, we’re celebrating great partners, building behind the scenes, and getting ready for a busy summer ahead. Perle Labs Update Building Together A huge congratulations to the team at @PrismaXai on their official launch! We're proud to be a Day 1 Launch Partner and part of PrismaX's First 100 as they work to build more rigorous human feedback loops into AI training. Better AI starts with better human judgment, and we're excited to support teams helping raise the standard for AI quality across the industry. Meanwhile, we're continuing to prepare for a busy summer, with new campaigns, upcoming events, and more community initiatives already in the works. Stay tuned. There's plenty more to come. Top AI Stories OpenAI Takes the Chip Battle In-House @OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI inference chip this week, developed in partnership with Broadcom as part of its long-term strategy to build more of its own AI infrastructure. Called Jalapeño, the chip is designed to run AI models more efficiently while reducing dependence on third-party hardware. OpenAI says early testing shows stronger performance per watt than today's leading chips, marking a direct challenge to NVIDIA's dominance. The launch signals a much bigger shift. AI companies are no longer just competing on models. They're increasingly building the hardware stack underneath them. Source: Yahoo Finance Samsung Makes a $648B AI Bet @Samsung is reportedly preparing to invest 1,000 trillion won ($648 billion) across South Korea over the next decade, one of the largest AI and semiconductor investment plans ever announced. The initiative spans AI data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, batteries, displays, and robotics, while aiming to strengthen South Korea's position as a global AI and chip powerhouse. The scale of the investment highlights how AI is no longer just reshaping companies. It's becoming national infrastructure. Source: Reuters Micron Joins AI's Trillion-Dollar Club @MicronTech surged past Meta and briefly overtook Tesla in market value this week after issuing a stronger-than-expected forecast driven by booming AI demand. The company revealed customers have already committed $22 billion in future memory chip purchases, sending shares sharply higher and pushing Micron's market capitalization close to $1.4 trillion. As demand for AI compute continues to grow, companies supplying the underlying hardware are becoming some of the biggest winners of the AI boom. Source: BNN Bloomberg Stay in the Loop That's a wrap for the week. What stood out this week was the scale of investment flowing into the infrastructure behind AI. From custom chips and trillion-dollar hardware companies to national investment plans, it's becoming clear that the next phase of AI will be built just as much on compute as on models. At Perle, we believe the same principle applies to data. As AI systems become more capable and more deeply integrated into the real world, the quality of the human intelligence behind them becomes even more important. State of AI Infra – Week of May 22 In Short This week’s AI infrastructure theme: from incremental cloud expansion to full industrial capex supercycle. Hyperscaler spending forecasts are being revised upward in real time, GPU demand is broadening well beyond traditional cloud buyers, and capital markets are issuing long-duration debt against contracted AI infrastructure revenues. The pattern across every story this week is consistent: compute infrastructure is now being underwritten as a permanent, large-scale economic asset, not a cyclical technology bet. Highlight Nvidia Posts Record $81.6B Quarterly Revenue as AI Infrastructure Demand Broadens Beyond Hyperscalers Nvidia reported record quarterly revenue of $81.6 billion — up 85% YoY and 20% QoQ — with the Data Center segment generating $75.2 billion alone (up 92% YoY). The quarter also marked a structural shift in how Nvidia frames its business: the company reorganized into Data Center and Edge Computing segments, with Data Center split further into Hyperscale and ACIE (AI Clouds, Industrial, and Enterprise). The reorganization formally acknowledges that demand is now coming from AI-native cloud providers, enterprise deployments, sovereign AI programs, and industrial AI, not just the big four hyperscalers. The revenue mix tells a secondary story. Networking revenue came in at $14.8 billion, up 199% YoY, nearly double the rate of compute growth. Scaling AI infrastructure is increasingly a bandwidth problem as much as a GPU problem. Meanwhile, the Edge Computing segment generated $6.4 billion (up 29% YoY) spanning robotics, AI-RAN, and autonomous systems. Why it matters: A broadening customer base, networking outpacing compute, and a new edge revenue line confirm that the AI infrastructure build-out is entering a more distributed, infrastructure-grade phase. This is not a single-customer cycle. (Source) 4 More Top Stories Moody’s Raises Hyperscaler Capex Forecast by $85B, Now Approaching $1T by 2027 Moody’s revised its forecast upward by $85 billion, now projecting ~$785B in 2026 and approaching $1 trillion by 2027 across Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, and CoreWeave. The revision pace is itself the signal — only months ago the figure was ~$700B. Hyperscalers collectively added ~$700B in RPOs over the last two quarters, a leading indicator of future infrastructure demand. Moody’s also flagged rising financial pressure: capex intensity and debt levels are now large enough to materially influence balance sheet quality at the mega-cap level. (Source) Akamai Launches $2.6B Zero-Coupon Bond Offering Following Major AI Cloud Contracts Akamai issued $2.6B in convertible senior notes (2030/2032 maturities) at 0% coupon, an unusually favorable structure that follows a $1.8B / seven-year contract with Anthropic and a separate $200M CIS agreement. Zero-coupon issuance anchored by contracted AI demand is a clean example of capital markets pricing AI infrastructure as durable, investment-grade revenue. (Source) Nscale Secures $790M Financing for Norway AI Campus Anchored by Microsoft Demand Nscale secured $790M (plus a $790M accordion facility) for its 230MW Narvik campus, expected to be anchored by Microsoft with ~30,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs. The deal continues a pattern of lenders financing large-scale AI infrastructure when hyperscaler demand visibility exists upfront. Norway’s renewable energy and cooling economics are making it a structural destination for hyperscale AI deployment. (Source) Alibaba Cloud Says AI Demand Requires 10x More Compute Than 2022 Levels Alibaba Cloud CEO Eddie Wu said the company expects to need roughly 10x its 2022 compute capacity to meet AI demand. Cloud Intelligence Group reported ~$6.0B in quarterly revenue (up 38% YoY), with AI services at ~$1.3B, the company’s 11th consecutive quarter of triple-digit AI revenue growth. AI products are now ~30% of external revenue, with management guiding for >50% within one year. Chinese hyperscalers are entering the global infrastructure expansion cycle at scale. (Source)

CNBC incorrectly reported that the Great Jensen Huang, of Nvidia, was not invited to the incredible gathering of the World’s Greatest Businessmen/women proudly going to China. In actuality, Jensen is currently on Air Force One and, unless I ask him to leave, which is highly unlikely, CNBC’s reporting is incorrect or, as they say in politics, FAKE NEWS! It is an Honor to have Jensen, Elon, Tim Apple, Larry Fink, Stephen Schwarzmann, Kelly Ortberg (Boeing), Brian Sikes (Cargill), Jane Fraser (Citi), Larry Culp (GE Aerospace), David Solomon (Goldman Sachs), Sanjay Mehrotra (Micron), Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm), and many others journeying to the Great Country of China where I will be asking President Xi, a Leader of extraordinary distinction, to “open up” China so that these brilliant people can work their magic, and help bring the People’s Republic to an even higher level! In fact, I promise, that when we are together, which will be in a matter of hours, I will make that my very first request. I have never seen or heard of any idea that would be more beneficial to our incredible Countries! President DONALD J. TRUMP

I have informed President Xi, of China, that the United States will allow NVIDIA to ship its H200 products to approved customers in China, and other Countries, under conditions that allow for continued strong National Security. President Xi responded positively! $25% will be paid to the United States of America. This policy will support American Jobs, strengthen U.S. Manufacturing, and benefit American Taxpayers. The Biden Administration forced our Great Companies to spend BILLIONS OF DOLLARS building “degraded” products that nobody wanted, a terrible idea that slowed Innovation, and hurt the American Worker. That Era is OVER! We will protect National Security, create American Jobs, and keep America’s lead in AI. NVIDIA’s U.S. Customers are already moving forward with their incredible, highly advanced Blackwell chips, and soon, Rubin, neither of which are part of this deal. My Administration will always put America FIRST. The Department of Commerce is finalizing the details, and the same approach will apply to AMD, Intel, and other GREAT American Companies. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
