Final Remediation Update: Flow Security Incident Counterfeit Token Destruction Complete: Flow Foundation today confirmed the permanent destruction of 87.4 billion counterfeit $FLOW tokens, concluding the technical remediation of the December 27, 2025 security incident. The destruction, executed onchain by the Community Governance Council, removes all seized counterfeit assets from circulation. This action completes the final mechanical step of Flow's isolated recovery plan as outlined in the December technical post-mortem. The network has been operating normally since validators deployed the security patch within 24 hours of the incident, with additional security safeguards now implemented across the protocol. Exchange Service Restoration: Exchange and infrastructure services continue to be restored through active coordination with partners: Kraken, Gate, and Coinbase have fully resumed $FLOW deposits and withdrawals. Additional exchange services are completing reconciliation processes, expected to resume imminently. Network Health: Flow has returned to full operational health with continued ecosystem activity ⤵️ •The network processed over 3 million transactions in a single week. • Core DeFi protocols including @KittyPunchXYZ , @playMFL , @IncrementFi , and @flowty_io are fully operational. • Developer activity and protocol deployments have returned to pre-incident levels. • @DisneyPinnacle successfully executed a sell-out consumer drop during the recovery period. • @peakmoney_ , Dapper Labs' consumer finance platform designed to bring mainstream users to DeFi, has entered early-access testing Looking Forward: With security remediation complete, Flow is focused on continued ecosystem growth and product development. The network's recent protocol upgrades introduce ongoing deflationary pressures through transaction fee mechanisms, aligning tokenomics with long-term network sustainability. Full technical details on the incident and recovery process remain available in Flow's technical post-mortem. https://flow.com/post/dec-27-technical-post-mortem
At 11am PT Jan 30th: Flow Foundation will burn 87.4 billion counterfeit tokens. These tokens being destroyed have already been reclaimed and secured as part of the Network Isolated Recovery Plan following the December 27th security incident. At no point during the security incident or during the recovery process were user assets lost or at risk. Today's burn is the final step; permanently destroying the counterfeit supply. The Flow network is secure and user assets remain safe.
“ The enshrinement of Flow Credit Markets transforms the protocol’s business model by monetizing automation. Because FCM relies on the onchain scheduler to constantly rebalance portfolios and compound yields, it generates a high baseline of transactions. Once these automated strategies push the network past ~250 TPS, the fees burned are designed to exceed new issuance, making FLOW net deflationary. This directly links the protocol's activity to the token's value, creating a self-sustaining economic engine." - @MessariCrypto
Isolated Recovery Complete – Counterfeit FLOW Recovered This morning, the final recovery of outstanding counterfeit FLOW from remaining centralized exchanges, including Binance and HTX, was executed by the Community Governance Council. As of today, all counterfeit FLOW traced by forensic firms has been successfully recovered and is now isolated and restricted on-chain pending destruction. This marks the conclusion of Phase 4 of the Isolated Recovery Plan, fulfilling the mandate ratified by the validator network via super-majority consensus. With the recovery complete, the Foundation has scheduled for tomorrow, Jan 13th, 2026 the removal of elevated access used by the Community Governance Council for recovery operations. This temporary emergency measure, deployed for the first time in Flow’s five-year history, was critical for this surgical recovery. It is important to remind everyone that any power given to and action taken by the Governance Council is fully transparent and auditable onchain. Furthermore, any changes to node software must be approved by a majority of network validators in order to proceed. Permanent destruction of counterfeit tokens is scheduled for January 30th, 2026. In the interim, external legal counsel and forensic partners are coordinating with exchanges to assess user exposure. The Foundation is fully committed to cooperate with exchange partners to facilitate a prompt return to full functionality across every trading venue. Coinbase, Kraken, and Gate have already resumed their deposit and withdrawal services. We want to thank our community of believers, ecosystem partners, infrastructure providers, and the cooperative exchange teams who made this targeted and orderly recovery feasible. The surgical removal of the threat is complete, the network is restored, and Flow is ready to move forward stronger than before.
Flow Network Exploit Post-mortem On December 27, 2025, an attacker exploited a vulnerability in the Flow network to counterfeit tokens, extracting approximately $3.9 million USD across bridges. No existing user balances were accessed or compromised. The attack duplicated assets but did not touch legitimate holdings, with the vast majority of counterfeit assets being contained onchain or frozen by exchange partners before they could be liquidated. Network validators have ratified a decentralized governance action authorizing the permanent destruction of 100% of counterfeit assets. The network resumed operations on December 29th and is operating as expected with full transaction history preserved. Attack Vector The attack demonstrated significant technical sophistication. The attacker deployed over 40 malicious smart contracts in a coordinated sequence, exploiting a three-part attack chain: 1) Attachment import validation bypass 2) Circumvention of defensive checks on built-in types 3) Exploitation of contract initializer semantics. The root cause was a type confusion vulnerability in the Cadence runtime (v1.8.8), now patched (v1.8.9 and later). The flaw allowed the attacker to disguise a protected asset (which should be non-copyable) as a standard data structure (which can be copied), bypassing the runtime's safety checks and enabling token counterfeiting. Remediation Beyond bridging assets out of Flow, the attacker attempted to deposit counterfeit FLOW across several CEX, with many exchange partners freezing the deposits upon receipt due to the abnormal size and internal AML protocols. Approximately 50% of those counterfeit FLOW deposits have already been returned by cooperative exchange partners (OKX, Gate, MEXC) and destroyed, and the Foundation is actively coordinating with remaining exchanges. The network was restored on December 29, 2025, via an Isolated Recovery Plan that preserves all legitimate transaction history. This approach was selected following ecosystem-wide consultation with exchanges, bridge operators, and infrastructure partners. The Isolated Recovery Plan was chosen specifically to avoid reconciliation risk for off-chain custodial systems and cross-chain protocols maintaining independent state. The Foundation is cooperating with blockchain forensic partners including zeroShadow and Find Labs and relevant law-enforcement authorities to support ongoing investigations. Full technical details of the vulnerability, exploit mechanism, forensic analysis, and remediation architecture are linked in the comment.
Flow exploit leaves NFT loan borrowers 'in limbo' after network pause https://www.theblock.co/post/384094/flow-exploit-nft-loan-borrowers-limbo-network-pause?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social
Flow Foundation Statement on Exchange Coordination Following December 27th Exploit: Since the December 27th exploit, the Flow Foundation and our forensic partners have worked around the clock with global exchanges to protect users and restore normal operations. Kraken, Coinbase, and Upbit have been exceptional partners, with Kraken already resuming regular services. We are concerned by one exchange's handling of this incident. Within hours of the exploit, a single account deposited 150M $FLOW, approximately 10% of total token supply, converted a substantial portion to BTC, and withdrew over $5M within the span of a few hours before the network was halted. This transaction pattern represents an AML/KYC failure that transferred financial risk to users who unknowingly purchased fraudulent tokens. Forensic analysts have identified significant trading irregularities inconsistent with normal market activity on this exchange's $FLOW markets both before and after the network halt. Our requests for clarification about these trading patterns through operational channels have gone unanswered. We urgently call for a meeting at the highest levels of decision-making to address these concerns and identify a path forward that protects users across all platforms. We believe this situation can be resolved constructively, but it requires transparent engagement. Flow Foundation is fully cooperating with law enforcement and ongoing investigations. We remain committed to protecting every user affected by this exploit, regardless of which platform they use.
This is the verified update from the Flow Foundation. INCIDENT CONFIRMED On December 27, 2025, an attacker exploited a vulnerability in Flow's execution layer and moved approximately $3.9M in assets off-network before validators executed a coordinated halt. Critically, this exploit did not access existing user balances. All user deposits remain intact. The Foundation's security team has mapped the exit path. Current status: CONFIRMED FUNDS EXITED TO DATE: ~$3.9M → Primarily routed through bridges (Celer, Debridge, Relay, Stargate) → Attacker wallet identified and flagged → Active laundering via Thorchain/Chainflip being tracked in real-time → Freeze requests submitted to Circle, Tether, and major exchanges → Forensic analysis ongoing CONTAINMENT: Complete → Network halt severed all exit paths → No further unauthorized activity possible → Remediation in progress The confirmed funds exited represent a manageable amount that does not threaten network solvency or user funds. The immediate priority is remediation and safe restart. RESTART TIMELINE The protocol fix has been developed and is entering final validation. → Target restart: Within 4-6 hours, pending successful testnet validation → Next status update: Within 2 hours → Full technical post-mortem: Within 72 hours The network will not be restarted until the fix has been fully validated. The Foundation will provide updates every 2 hours until restart is complete. @FindLabs is publishing the Foundation's forensic data below, including transaction hashes and the attacker's Ethereum wallet. The Foundation thanks the community for its patience during the investigation.

An excerpt from the 296 page @MessariCrypto 2026 Theses Paper "2026 Outlook DeFi has had a highly technical barrier to entry and is historically fraught with risk, ranging from exploits to liquidations. This has hindered adoption among non-crypto natives. In 2026, Flow is focused on bridging the gap between consumer finance and DeFi with the launch of Flow Credit Markets (FCM), a lending protocol enabling mainstream users to leverage high DeFi yields while mitigating liquidations and smart contract risk. Dapper Labs is commercializing Flow’s infrastructure with Peak Money, a mobile wallet built on top of the FCM. By abstracting away seed phrases and technical hurdles, the app repackages DeFi transactions into a simple, “defibank” interface, addressing the usability concerns that have long restricted crypto to niche audiences. Beyond the app itself, Peak Money establishes a new operational standard for the Flow ecosystem: • The Foundation builds the permanent, enshrined utility. • Strategic Partners launch applications to commercialize the utility. • The Community inherits a robust, liquid foundation with a sustainable revenue model. By hardening financial primitives such as FCM directly into the protocol, rather than relying on third-party contracts, Flow is vertically integrating to become an active infrastructure provider. This is powerful because apps no longer need to bootstrap their own security or liquidity. Instead, they inherit a unified, secure standard instantly, allowing them to focus entirely on distribution and user acquisition while Flow handles the "heavy lifting." The enshrinement of FCM transforms the protocol’s business model by monetizing automation. Because the FCM relies on the onchain scheduler to constantly rebalance portfolios and compound yields, it generates a high baseline of transactions. Once these automated strategies push the network past ~250 TPS, the fees burned are designed to exceed new issuance, making FLOW net deflationary. This directly links the protocol's activity to the token's value, creating a self-sustaining economic engine."
